Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee took a heartfelt initiative on Wednesday by sending mangoes and jackfruits from her personal garden to the Jagannath temple in Digha, where the sacred Snan Yatra was held. These seasonal fruits were among the 56 traditional items offered to Lord Jagannath during the ritual.
This year’s Snan Yatra holds special significance as it is the first grand bathing festival to be organized at the newly constructed Jagannath temple in Digha, inaugurated earlier on Akshaya Tritiya. A special pavilion was adorned for the Snan Yatra, drawing large numbers of devotees and ISKCON followers.
At around 11 am, the ceremonial bathing of Lord Jagannath, Lord Balram, and Goddess Subhadra was performed with sacred water and traditional herbal mixtures. By evening, Lord Jagannath was seen in his majestic ‘Gajavesha’ (elephant attire), a cherished visual for devotees before he retreats into ‘Antapura’ for 15 days.
According to belief, after the ritual bath, the Lord catches a divine fever and withdraws from public view. The temple will remain closed for darshan until June 26, when Lord Jagannath will re-emerge to embark on the famous Rath Yatra to his aunt’s house.
